Mission
Your core mission as part of the Application Science function is to ensure Vive’s products are designed for purpose and deliver an outstanding grower experience by bridging the technical data of the lab to the real-world application in the field. This includes the development and operation of pilot scale application equipment for R&D work, the development of application methods and best practices, and the creation of technical materials which communicate the value of Vive’s products to audiences of all technical levels.
The role spans all aspects of application science and technology, with special emphasis on in-furrow, foliar and irrigation uses of Vive’s synthetic and biological pipeline.
You will deliver on this mission by:
- Designing, building and operating pilot scale equipment within the Application Technology Lab.
- Conducting application “fitness for use” lab testing for research and development projects.
- Developing technical tools in the lab and field which deepen the scientific understanding of and communicate the value of Vive’s products.
- Coordinating application field trials in North America.
- Supporting retail and grower customers on location within North America, as required.
- Monitoring trends in application technology within North America and developing application best practices for Vive’s products to ensure an outstanding grower use experience.
- Scoping project work to identify critical milestones and develop timeline estimates, and executing these plans to ensure the project meets the established goals.

- Internally – Joint Health and Safety Committee, Product Development Chemistry, Research, Biology, Process Development, Portfolio Management, Agronomy, Sales, Business Development
- Externally – Service Providers, Suppliers, Consultants, Partners, Universities, Equipment manufacturers
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Identify and commission new equipment for Vive’s Application Technology lab and develop experimental methodologies to “bring the field to the lab” to ensure Vive’s products are built for purpose.
- Conduct laboratory application testing of experimental and commercial products and support other teams doing the same. Author technical protocols and result summaries of these tests to be reviewed by internal and external audiences of various technical levels.
- Be a technical leader and subject matter expert by staying informed on the application methods and results
of our current and future products and bringing these learnings back to the technical team to inform on product and experimental design.
- Plan and execute application field trials with focus on in-furrow, foliar, and irrigation application.
- Maintain external relationships with universities, consultants and equipment manufacturers.
- Create technical tools and publications which demonstrate the application of Vive’s products.
- Travel to retail and grower customers within North America, up to 10 weeks yearly.
- Follow all applicable employment, health and safety legislation. Demonstrate corporate values in the performance of the work and interactions with others.
- Perform other job‐related duties as necessary.
Skills & Experiences
- University degree or equivalent in an applicable scientific discipline (Agricultural Engineering, Crop Science, Plant Agriculture, Agronomy, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or similar). B.Sc with 7+ years experience, M.Sc. with 4+ years experience or PhD with 2+ yrs experience in a relevant field such as agrochemicals, equipment, ag retail, industrial spraying or other as applicable.
- Practical experience is highly desired, for example, pesticide application of all types, sprayer operation, chemigation or other farm equipment experience.
- Marketing, sales or other technical customer-facing experience is an asset.
- Ontario Grower Pesticide Safety Course Certification is an asset
- Must have Ontario G license.
- Strategic thinker with very strong analytical and problem-solving skills, creativity and innovation. Propensity for continuous learning and experimenting. Excellent time management, planning and priority setting skills. Self-motivated and able to adapt to changing business priorities. Good oral and written communication skills with very good interpersonal skills.

Work Environment
- Most work is performed in an environment that is normally clean and comfortable. Some of the work is performed in an environment where exposures to physical, chemical and biological hazards exist under controlled conditions.
- Potential hazards may include noise, temperature extremes, biohazards and hazardous chemical products. Standard safety procedures will describe personal protective devices that are mandatory requirements of performing the work.
- Can initiate new processes or take on additional responsibilities with the prior approval of their supervisor.
- Has some latitude to create and implement process improvements within the confines of achieving objectives of the role.
- Decisions beyond the scope of the role are generally validated or approved by their manager or more senior staff member.
- Incumbents may require direction with new instruments, changed SOPs, and project goal setting.
