The Applications Engineer is responsible for helping Phycus Biotechnologies develop new and novel product applications for its chemicals of interest. In this capacity, the Applications Engineer will identify, develop, and evaluate new product chemistries, and work closely with the business development team to advise on market opportunities. The role requires extensive knowledge of the practical application of materials science, engineering science and technology, and you will help develop new products by developing new chemistries. Application R&D experience in areas related to engineering plastics, including processing of polymeric materials by blending/compounding, extrusion, sheet production, fiber/non-wovens, and development of new ester formulations. Responsibilities include: collaborating within the functional team to support technology projects, manufacturing, and customer inquiries; awareness of how technical disciplines interact within a project; use of industry practices and standards; adapting methods to changing inputs/outputs; representing the team at the Department level; potentially leading Technology Projects; documenting work plans, results, and conclusions; identifying and securing support for research topics; interacting with customers and understanding their key business focus; working with instrument and lab equipment suppliers; innovating to provide new solutions for product application, process technology, and core capabilities. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering. Knowledge of the practical application of materials science, engineering science and technology. Up to 5 years of relevant industry or academic experience in rheological characterization of polymeric materials (parallel plate, extensional and capillary rheometry, DMA). Ability to read and understand patent literature and work with IP/legal teams. Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Understands plans for meeting business strategy and objectives; demonstrates speed and flexibility; strong customer focus and service orientation in a cross-cultural setting. Additional experience preferred: thermal characterization (DSC, TGA); characterization of polymeric materials (transition temperatures, crystallization kinetics by DSC; optical microscopy of crystal growth and morphology; mechanical testing: tensile, impact); application R&D in engineering plastics processing; experience with CAD/CAE such as SolidWorks.
