Applications Bioinformatician (8 month temporary role)

United States

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Applications Bioinformatician with expertise in microbial genomics and metagenomics to join our Applications team on a temporary basis.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with our Applications Domain Specialists and laboratory scientists to analyze sequencing data, answer complex biological questions, and provide best-practice guidance to customers and internal teams. You will evaluate different analysis methods, interpret data in biological context, and clearly communicate findings to stakeholders through reports, meetings, and webinars.

This is a hands-on position for a bioinformatics professional who thrives in multi-disciplinary environments and enjoys working across the full experimental cycle—from data generation to publication.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and refine pipelines for DNA and direct RNA sequencing applications on ONT’s nanopore sensing platform, with a focus on microbiology and metagenomics.
  • Partner with laboratory-based scientists to design experiments, interpret sequencing results, and report findings in a clear and biologically relevant manner.
  • Collaborate with other bioinformaticians across the company to adapt and improve analytical tools and workflows.
  • Keep up to date with the latest advances in sequencing technologies and integrate new approaches into analyses where appropriate.
  • Present findings to internal teams, customers, and external audiences (meetings, webinars, publications).
  • Contribute to a multi-disciplinary team environment across the full experimental cycle, from sample collection through to high-quality deliverables.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

  • MSc (or equivalent experience) with significant bioinformatics and sequencing data analysis
  • Undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences
  • Proven track record in bioinformatics sequence analysis within microbiology.
  • Experience working across the full experimental pipeline—from concept through data generation and interpretation.
  • Strong background in handling and analyzing large sequencing datasets.
  • Hands-on experience collaborating with lab scientists to refine experiments and analyses.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Perl, R, etc.) and strong data visualization skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; confident presenting data to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of NGS technologies and bioinformatics methods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD
