Summary
We are looking for a Junior Engineer to support the design, prototyping, and testing of next-generation scientific instruments, on a 4-month, full-time and onsite contract. Based at our Toronto, Ontario location, this is an exciting opportunity for an early-career engineer or co-op student to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary hardware development environment. Working closely with a Senior Engineer, you will assist in the design, prototyping and testing of next-generation scientific instruments. Preference will be given to candidates with academic or early industry experience in electrical or mechanical engineering, particularly in the areas of embedded systems, PCB design, or mechanical prototyping.
This is not a remote or hybrid position. Candidates must be currently located in, or willing to relocate to, Toronto, Ontario for the full duration of the 4-month contract.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and development of scientific instrumentation according to defined technical requirements under the guidance of the senior engineer.
- Contribute to system integration and prototyping activities across mechanical and electrical domain.
- Support mechanical design using CAD tools and fabrication methods using 3D printing and CNC milling.
- Aid in schematic design, PCB layout, and circuit development.
- Perform hands-on hardware tasks such as soldering, wiring, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain detailed documentation of design decisions, test results, and development progress, and report all work to the supervising senior engineer.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including firmware, software, and mechanical engineering, to ensure cohesive integration of hardware components and bring up new prototypes and platforms.

Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree or recently graduated from a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, industrial or mechatronics engineering.

Technical Skills
- Knowledge of the PCB design software KiCAD.
- Familiarity with the CAD/CAM tool Fusion360.
- Exposure to microcontroller-based platforms (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Teensy, ESP32).
- Comfortable with basic prototyping techniques including soldering, breadboarding, wiring, 3D printing and CNC milling.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
